Nov. 17th Noon to 2:00 p.m.        COVID-19: Addressing Impacts of Schedule Delays and Project Suspensions, Plus Lessons Learned from 2019 Court Decisions - This virtual presentation by Kent Holland, J.D., will address risk management issues arising out of delays and impacts from COVID-19 to construction projects, and will also review lessons learned from decisions rendered by courts in 2019, including case studies.

Design Professional Contracts:  Allocating the Risks - Kent Holland, J.D., will address managing the risk allocation in design professional contracts, and will provide example clauses and discussion of how to revise and negotiate terms and conditions of the contract to increase insurability.

We are shaking it up for our September presentations (pun intended). We have rock star Emily Guglielmo, SE, PD, SEI and NCSEA President.  She never sleeps.  This is two one hour sessions. Sept. 17th and 24th. Noon to 1:00 each day.    

This session will provide an introduction to seismic design methodology and approaches used in ASCE 7.  It will focus on ASCE 7/ IBC seismic provisions that are often misunderstood or incorrectly applied by the practicing structural engineer. Key topics will include: Redundancy (ρ), R, C_d and Ω_o, horizontal and vertical lateral force resisting system combinations, and irregularities. Each topic will include references to lessons learned from past earthquakes, code provisions, suggestions to simplify, and sample problems. Register on line www.seaoal.com

SEAoAL and KELLER (Formerly Hayward Baker) have partnered with the ACFA to share the investigation, design & stabilization of the Pointe du Hoc Cliff in Normandy, France. This was an important site during the Normandy landings on D-Day. ⁠ ⁠ This project was commissioned by the American Battle Monuments Commission and investigated by Texas A&M University.

It is our pleasure to announce the availability of the 2020 Structural Engineers Association of Alabama’s (SEAoAL) scholarship application. The scholarship program was founded in 2014 to benefit the future structural engineers in our state, and we have since distributed more than $20,000 in scholarships to several Alabama students.

Scholarships are available for students who are both residents of Alabama and fall into one of the following categories:

• Junior and Senior students of an accredited program
• College students entering an accredited Graduate or Doctoral Program
• Post-graduate students continuing in an accredited Graduate or Doctoral Program
• Persons employed in the field of structural engineering and licensed as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) entering an accredited Graduate or Doctoral Program

This program will last from 8am - 4pm 

A Day of Concrete Knowledge is designed to provide valuable education programs on concrete topics. This full-day seminar provides 8 hours of AIA approved HSW LU & engineering PDH credits. Certificates will be issued to both architects and engineers.

There is a fee of $30 to attend. All proceeds go to the Alabama Concrete Industries Foundation (ACIF). The ACIF yearly awards two $8,000 scholarships to students enrolled in architecture, engineering, or building sciences at one of Alabama’s universities. Payments can me made online or the day of class.
