Speakers

Ronald Piester, AIA

Ronald Piester, AIA, is a highly accomplished architect and leader in the field of building safety and sustainability. With a strong background in management, strategic planning, and government affairs, he has made significant contributions to the architectural community throughout his career. As a NYS Registered Architect and State Building Code Administrator, Ronald has demonstrated his expertise in navigating complex regulatory frameworks and ensuring compliance with codes and standards. His experience extends to various roles, including his tenure as the Director of the Division of Building Standards and Codes at the NYS Department of State in Albany, New York, where he managed a division responsible for the administration and enforcement of the NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and State Energy Conservation Construction Code.

Ronald's commitment to advancing the field of architecture extends beyond his role in government. As the Past President of the International Code Council Board of Directors, he played a pivotal role in shaping the organization's vision and priorities, advocating for sustainability and resilience. Currently, Ronald serves as the Vice President of Membership and Personnel Certification at the International Code Council, based in Birmingham, Alabama, overseeing key departments and strengthening industry relationships.

Sandra Hyde, P.E. 
Sandra 
Hyde, P.E. is Managing Director of Product Development for the International Code Council (ICC) where she develops books and seminars about the structural provisions of the International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), International Existing Building Code (IEBC) and structural topics. Sandra has coauthored books and seminars on these topics including the Special Inspection Manual and the Significant Changes to the IRC and IBC. She has experience in manufacturing and research of engineered wood products with Weyerhaeuser. Sandra is a Registered Civil Engineer and a member of EERI and NCSEA.

John A. Dal Pino, S.E. John has a broad range of project experience including design and analysis for new buildings, seismic evaluation and strengthening of existing and historic buildings, and construction engineering including deep excavation bracing, shoring and tunneling studies.

He had a long career at Degenkolb Engineers, and a shorter stint at FTF Engineering, both in San Francisco, before starting his own firm in 2023. He is also the Chair of the Editorial Board of STRUCTURE magazine. He has worked for the University of California system, the federal General Services Administration, Kaiser Permanente and the San Francisco International Airport. John lives in Oakland, and enjoys reading Russian history, sports and getting outdoors. John holds a B.S., M.S. and M.B.A. from UC Berkeley, and is a licensed Professional and Structural Engineer in California and Oregon.
